This elderly gentleman was suffering from Alzheimer's and was not able to take care of himself. All of his daily living needs were to be done by the nursing home staff. As with so many nursing homes, this one was understaffed and the staff was not well trained. While giving the gentleman a shower, one of the nursing home staff thought it would be funny to turn off the cold water. The scalding water began burning the gentleman so he began screaming for help. Worried that he would get into trouble for intentionally burning the man, the nursing home employee tried to get the gentleman to stop screaming. When that was unsuccessful, the employee began beating the man to try to stop his screaming. Luckily, another employee of the nursing home walked in to see what the screaming was all about and saw the beating occur. Amazingly, the man survived after a lengthy recovery period. The case was settled before trial.
